Men arrested for allegedly stealing oil and gas pipes

A Weld County sheriff's deputy on patrol in south Weld County early Tuesday arrested two men suspected of stealing $20,000 worth of oil and gas rig pipes.

Deputy Domonique Armstrong was on patrol about 2:45 a.m. near Weld County roads 19 and 20 east of Firestone when he found about 100 sections of drill stem pipe. The 30-foot-long pipes are used in drilling and natural gas operations, and apparently were taken from an Anadarko/Kerr-McGee work site.

The truck and trailer carrying the piping were apparently dragging much of it, making gouge marks in the road. Armstrong followed the drag marks to a pickup pulling a trailer loaded with the pipes.

The deputy stopped the truck and arrested the driver and passenger. The driver was identified as Austin Cavey, 22, of Platteville. He was charged with felony theft, tampering with oil and gas equipment, driving a vehicle while his license was under restraint and using expired license plates.

The passenger, 20-year-old Travis Cavey of Platteville, was booked into the Weld County Jail on charges of felony theft and tampering with oil and gas equipment. Both suspects are being held without bond.

Deputy Shane Scofield said photos of the men weren't released because the case is still under investigation.
